Flag & Facts

In these sentences we will be explaining the means of the Haitian flag. There are a total of three colors on the Haitian flag. Red (bottom) and blue (top) bands on the top and bottom with a white square in the middle. In the white square there is a palm tree in the middle of the  square, coat of arms and canons on each side. The Red and Blue are used to represent the black and mulatto populations. The signs in the flag represent the fight for independence.

Economics

Haiti has a total budget of 323.445 million gourdes which is about 2.5 billion dollars usd. This is funded by taxes, donations and international partnerships. Haiti’s top imports are Refined Petroleum, rice, cotton fabrics, and palm oil. Refined Petroleum is a fuel or chemical product that is made by crude oil. The crude oil is broken down into usable parts which creates Refined Petroleum. It is used to fuel cars with gasoline and diesel for big/heavy cars. Refined Petroleum is there to heat up stoves and fuel airplanes. Rice is a grain that is farmed. After it is farmed it is selled to intermediaries. Rice is a staple food in Haiti, with Haitian eating it everyday. Today rice is an essential food that is farmed and sold to millions of people. Haiti’s top exports are knit t-shirts, knit sweaters. These products are favored in the US with about two billion shirts sold each year. This area of work helps just about 30,000 people have a job but they are often paid really low which adds to all the poverty in Haiti.  On average one person makes just about $3,000 dollars a year. Which is really low compared to the DR with their GDP per capita being $23,100. With this low income often a lot of people live in poverty. Haiti’s biggest industries provide a lot of jobs. They are farming, manufacturing and construction. Farming has been in Haiti for centuries. Today 45% of Haiti’s population works on agriculture. These jobs are the major occupations of the citizens of Haiti. They farm things like mango, rice, fruits, and vegetables. These jobs also help with international trade. A major event that happened in Haiti, it experienced one of its biggest earthquakes ever in 2010, which caused a lot of destruction. This caused buildings to collapse and its capital was almost completely destroyed. Today, Haiti is still recovering economically and working to rebuild its infrastructure.
