Cap - Haïtien is a city in Haiti. There are about 274,000 people living there. Cap-Haïtien is located close to a historical city called Milot. Milot was Haiti’s first capital under Henri Christophe, also known as Henri I, who was the first and only King of Haiti. When Henri I was ruling Cap - Haïtien, he gave it the nickname “The Paris of the Antilles.” This is because of its wealth, which was widely known throughout the world. The city used art and agriculture to express feelings, wealth and story-telling. As mentioned before, Milot was Haiti’s first capital. Then in 1711 to 1770, Cap - Haïtien became the capital of Haiti from during the French rule but changed to Port - au - Prince and remains today. In February 2004, a group of militants took over Cap - Haïtien to try and force Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the president of Haiti at the time, out of office. After 24 days of pressure, the militants were successful and he was forced out of office and exiled from Haiti. Despite this, Cap - Haïtien has an international airport that people can travel into, so they can experience the island and its culture. It is also very close to a popular resort called Labadee, which many tourists visit.
