The Citadelle Laferrière

The Citadelle Laferrière is a fortress in Haiti. It was never used in battle but was always ready to fight. It was built after the French were defended in 1804. Four years later in 1805 it began to be built. The leader of this production was Henri Christophe who also played a key role in the independence of Haiti. The Citadelle Laferrière was completed in 1820. It was built by forced labor and took 20,000 lives. Citadelle Laferrière stands at about 910 metres tall or about 2,990 feet.  Later that year Henri Christophe had a stroke and some of his troops started to disobey his rules. He later committed suicide killing himself with a silver bullet through the heart. .It is the largest fortress in the world and one of the largest in the New World. The fortress was so strong that it survived a lot of earthquakes and other tropical storms. The fortress is a symbol of Haiti’s independence and the fight it took.
